Specifically created for homeschool students between 10 and 16 years old, the Junior Beekeepers Club provides an enriching introduction to the science of bees, hive care, and basic beekeeping techniques. Participants take part in experiential outdoor sessions and produce crafts inspired by the hive environment. The program convenes monthly and requires prior registration. Upon completing the course, students receive a certificate and may qualify for transcript credit. Each class is priced at $25, with all materials for beekeeping, crafts, and related projects supplied.
Students will gain comprehensive knowledge of bee biology, including their life cycle and roles within the hive, as well as awareness of pests and threats facing colonies. They will learn to operate a bee smoker, recognize beekeeping tools and hive components, and identify the queen bee. Instruction covers honey harvesting both manually and with an extractor, preparing hives for adverse weather and winter, and providing supplemental feeding. Additionally, students will acquire skills in rendering beeswax and crafting products such as lip balm and candles.
Each session lasts three hours, with students permitted to be dropped off unless a parent prefers to remain onsite. Parents also have the opportunity to enroll alongside their child to acquire fundamental beginner skills and knowledge in beekeeping.
The homeschoolers class is held on the last Wednesday of each month from 1:00 to 4:00 PM, with the schedule for November and December to be announced.
The community class for public or private school students is held on the third Saturday of the month from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. (Some exceptions apply.)
